This is because the size depends on how much power your household consumes.
As a rough estimate, if your electric bill is about $50/mo, you would need about 3 kW of solar to offset the majority of your electrical usage. A 3 kW system can range between $6,000 and $9,500 (after tax credit) depending on site conditions and equipment installed.
For a $100/mo electric bill, you would need around 5.5 kW of solar, ranging from $10,500 to $16,500.
For a $200/mo electric bill, you would need around 11.5 kW of solar, ranging from $21,000 to $33,600.
These price ranges are large because the size and components of each system have different variables. Some variables include:
- How much electricity you consume (as shown above).
- How much space you have available for mounting panels.
- The amount of shade on your panels throughout the day.
- Roof orientation, or how close to south-facing the panels will be.
- Cost differences between brands of solar panels and inverters.
- Cost differences in mounting panels on the roof versus mounting on the ground.
