Prometheus recently completed a community project serving 52 Navajo households in Black Mesa and Pinon Chapters. The install included new and upgraded solar equipment with 2.3 kW battery-based systems. We are proud to say this project brought power to remote homes that have never had power and were out of range for Navajo Tribal Utility Authority power lines.
Many of the people had waited 20 years for power, and they just kept thanking us.
The new systems included a microwave and refrigerator, a backup portable generator, battery monitoring, upgraded house wiring, and CFLs to replace existing incandescent bulbs.
Many of the homes were wired for electricity when they were built 20-30 years ago, but the grid never came. Connecting the solar arrays to the existing service panels meant when homeowners flipped the switch the lights now came on, instead of using lanterns and candles. The solar arrays and provided refrigerators allowed homeowners to store food for the first time.
This project was funded with a USDA High Energy Cost Grant, which provides money for those areas where it is cost prohibitive to run electrical lines out to these remote homes. Prometheus was selected through a Request for Proposal process. Our qualifications to win this bid included having 2 employees with NABCEP certifications. We are the only company in Northern Arizona to have two employees with this professional certification.
